Good discussion topic. I heard that David Blumenthal, the new National Cooridnator for HIT, will be issuing guidelines in the summer. I am not sure of the political process that will lead to the definition that will determine Medicare/Medicaid payments and where there is an opportunity to influence it. There are the basic requirements laid out in the legislation -- eprescribing, reporting on clinical quality and HIE capacity. I wonder if the HIE part is just the technology to connect providers to cooridnate care, or will there be a public health component as well? Does anybody know?
This is an opportunity to get community-wide data to promote health and prevent disease. That's an important component of how we intend to use our EHR -- to aggragate data for population health across our region.
