NGHN - Meaningful Use

Meaningful use? I like to answer this question by stating what a meningful use can achieve...

In general when I think of “Health IT” and meaningful use, “it” is achieving the following;
· Safe care
· Efficient delivery of care
· Effective care
· Consistent care
· Connected care

For the community & patients, the meaningful use achieves equality of access and care.

For EMR, it means that all information is flowing for the purposes of patient care, quality improvements/research and operations. The past, present and future information concerning patient and his or her care is easily entered, retrieve and presented throughout all touch points with integrity and accuracy guaranteed.

Of course, in the year 2009, I just like to see a lab interface that just works within weeks rather than months...

Meaningful use of EMR to me is:

- Proper set up of the EHR (EMR & EPM) application to guide users through a logical workflow, limit users’ access according to their professional duties, capture all clinically relevant data while improving the billing aspect of it all.

- On-the-fly reporting capabilities for the clinicians

Meaningful use of such an alphabet soup (experts) to me would be:

- To design policies that help standardize achieving the above mentioned needs

- Which I would think would require subgroups each focusing on a specific EHR vendor’s product

Just my thoughts
